Rhythms of the Land: Black History & Ancestral Connection

Rhythms of the Land: Black History & Ancestral Connection is a land-based wellness and interpretive experience held at Finca Ana Isa in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. Designed in honor of Black History Month, this experience invites participants to explore Black history through land, ancestry, rhythm, and hands-on learning—connecting African and Indigenous roots to present-day wellness and sustainability practices.

This Black History wellness experience is intentionally paced, welcoming, and grounded in place. Participants do not simply listen to history; they walk the land, reflect together, engage in rhythm, and build something tangible with their hands.

A Black History Wellness Experience Rooted in Land

Black history is often taught as a timeline. Rhythms of the Land approaches Black history as lived knowledge carried through land stewardship, food systems, rhythm, and community practice.

This experience centers the idea that Black history includes both African and Indigenous connections to land. Participants are guided to consider how ancestral knowledge survived through forced migration, cultural blending, and shared relationships with the natural world.

By placing the experience outdoors, on a working homestead, history becomes embodied rather than abstract.

The Role of the Land at Finca Ana Isa

Finca Ana Isa is a generational family homestead dedicated to sustainability, cultural education, and land-based wellness. The land itself serves as a primary interpreter throughout the experience.

Participants learn about crops grown on the finca, seasonal cycles, and how land stewardship supports both physical nourishment and community resilience. The guided farm walk naturally leads into a short forest bathing experience beneath the canopy, allowing participants to slow down and reconnect with their surroundings.

Rhythm as Ancestral Grounding

Across the African diaspora, rhythm has long been used as a tool for communication, regulation, and connection. In this experience, rhythm and sound are introduced as grounding practices rather than performance.

Facilitated by Cee Truth, participants explore rhythm as a shared ancestral language—one that bridges history, culture, and embodied presence. No musical experience is required.

Tuskegee University, George Washington Carver, and Community Sustainability

The experience is hosted by Karina Polen-Davis, a Certified Interpretive Guide and Tuskegee University alumna, where she completed academic training through the School of Agriculture with a focus in Animal and Poultry Sciences and Food and Nutritional Sciences. Her work at Finca Ana Isa reflects this foundation—grounding wellness, sustainability, and land stewardship in both lived practice and formal agricultural education.

This experience also highlights the enduring legacy of Tuskegee University and George Washington Carver, whose work emphasized education as service and sustainability as a pathway to community well-being. Carver’s philosophy of working with the land rather than against it informs the structure and intention of the program, particularly the hands-on garden bed workshop, where preparation, timing, and respect for natural cycles take priority.

Hands-On Learning: Preparing the Garden Bed

Rather than planting, participants work together to set up a 4 x 4 garden bed. This decision honors Indigenous practices that align planting with lunar phases. The focus is on preparation, soil health, and intention.

This portion of the experience reinforces the idea that sustainability begins at home, one small and repeatable action at a time.

Why Rhythms of the Land Matters

Rhythms of the Land: Black History & Ancestral Connection offers a grounded alternative to traditional Black History Month programming. It centers land, lived knowledge, and shared practice—creating space for reflection, learning, and connection that extends beyond the event itself.
